Try a Turkey Trot to keep the Thanksgiving pounds from piling on

You know you're going to consume more calories on Thanksgiving than you do nearly any other day of the year. And, very likely, you're going to have a hard time resisting the leftover pie on the day after. Hey, I'm not judging -- I am all about the pumpkin pie.

But, I do have a suggestion -- why not sign up for a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning? And no, Turkey Trots have nothing to do with Uncle Franks awkward run/walk to the bathroom after he indulges in too much gravy.

Turkey Trots take place all across the country in a variety of forms. If you're super industrious, you can seek out a marathon (or a half -- I'll still look up to you). A bonus for completing a long race like that -- you have a great excuse to stay out of the kitchen. Your legs are just so tiiiiired.

More often than not, though, Turkey Trots are shorter distances -- more like five or 10Ks, and a lot of times they help to raise money to feed hungry families in the area. My recommendation is to go for the longest run you're comfortable with, because not only will you work out on that day, but a longer run will force you to keep training in the weeks preceding the race.

And, if you can't find one in your area, why not start your own? Map out a route, convince some (gullible) friends to join you, and lace up your sneaks on Thanksgiving morning. And then at dinner, you can give thanks that it's over.
