guinea pigIn North America, we revel in treats like turkey, chicken, and that irresistible, trend-setting bacon. But elsewhere ... some countries delight in a good serving of pigeon, and if you head to Peru, you could find a squeaky guinea pig on your plate.

The guinea pig meal is nothing new. Heck, if you watch MTV, you might have caught that whining girl freak out on The Exiled Diaries when she was served one. But The Associated Press reports that Callao, a Peruvian province, is taking it one step further. They're trying to teach the world about the benefits of an economical serving of guinea pig for the holidays. They claim that it can feed 7-8 people for about $3.20, that the meat is rich in protein and free of cholesterol, and that it tastes similar to rabbit and dark chicken meat. Heck, it's so ingrained in the country's culture that a painting of the Last Supper in Cuzco shows Jesus and his disciples chowing down on the little critter.

It might seem strange to us, but it's really no stranger than having a cute duck or rabbit. Will you consider adding guinea pig to your holiday menu?
