Last night, NBC's sitcom block celebrated Halloween, to different degrees. The first hour -- "Community" and "Parks and Recreation" -- was the most Halloween heavy, "The Office" the least Halloweenish, and "30 Rock" split the difference. Here's a recap of last night's action, rated for holiday content, with the two best lines from each show.
"Community"
Halloween Element: Annie throws a Day of the Dead Halloween party, convinced she will be the cool kid she never was in high school if Jeff attends. Predictably, he sneaks out to the faculty party to hit on a professor. Abed is a surprisingly effective Batman, nailing the voice. Pierce is the Beastmaster, Britta is a squirrel, and Troy is a "Delirious"-era Eddie Murphy, complete with fake microphone. Pierce's tripping scene is Chevy Chase's best moment on the show so far. And seeing Ken Jeong work every week is a treat. Abed's heroics actually made me clap. I will be disappointed if we never see Abed as Batman again on the show.
Best Line: "What up, Urkel?" Señor Chang to Shirley, who is supposed to be dressed like Harry Potter.
Runner Up: "I never saw Beastmaster, I just wanted to be cool." Pierce, from under a pile of desks and chairs.
"Parks and Recreation"
Halloween Element: Leslie renews her war with Greg Pikitis, a student she suspects of defacing a statue in the park every year. Ann hosts a Halloween party dressed as Raggedy Ann. Most guests, however, don't put much effort into their costumes -- a doctor comes dressed as a doctor (and some nurses come as ... nurses). Tom steps up as T-Pain (even singing his ode to a stripper) and saves the party. Dave, played by a hilariously understated Louis CK, spends most of the evening keeping Leslie from torturing the Greg, who turns out to be a criminal genius.
Best Line: "Do you know how fun gay Halloween parties are? Last year I saw three Jonas Brothers make out with three Robert Pattinsons. It was amazing." April, on what she missed to come to Ann's party.
Runner Up: "Hey, slutty teenage girls dressed as kittens, pump your own stomachs this year." Ann, on having Halloween off from her job as a nurse.
"The Office"
Halloween Element: Another Halloween party, as the warehouse is turned into a haunted house for Dunder-Mifflin's employees and their families. A funny episode -- Jim is forced to call on a client with Michael looking over his shoulder and Pam and Andy going on the road -- but the least Halloweeny of the bunch, since the festivities were limited to the cold opening.
Best Line: "Kids, just remember, suicide is never the answer." Michael Scott, after scaring a group of grade school kids by swinging and gurgling on a fake noose.
Runner Up: "I vant to sell your blood!" Creed as a vampire.
"30 Rock"
Halloween Element: The writers try to plan a Halloween party that isn't lame, Tracy tries to avoid the curse of celebrities dying in threes by killing Jimmy Fallon (whom he doesn't recognize as a celebrity). A great dig at himself -- Fallon pledges to kill his first guest that night -- a dog who plays soccer -- to fulfill the rule of three. Another reference to amazing gay Halloween parties, this time to Mario Cantone's party from last year, which gives the writers the idea of trying to get Jenna's gay friends to make their party popular. There is one non-Halloween plot, where Liz and Jack try to find a new cast member to appeal to "middle America" and wind up hiring ventriloquist Rick and Pumpkin (played by Jeff Dunham and Bubba J., respectively). The deal sours when the act starts making off-color jokes and Jack attacks Pumpkin (yes, he attacks the puppet).
Best Line: "When the Parcells first came to America, they lived in a town called Sexcriminalboat." Kenneth, talking about his family origins.
Runner Up: "I've got to go somewhere where nothing happens. Can you get me on Charlie Rose?" Tracy, trying to avoid the curse of celebrities dying in threes.
