If you live near a Walmart you have a new Thanksgiving night option: you can go
shopping all night long! Yes, on
Thanksgiving!
You know that bored feeling you get after dinner, when you've eaten as much pie as possible, napped twice and the dishes are all done? When there's nothing to do but watch old movies and recheck your shopping list for
Black Friday?
Now, thanks to Walmart, you can get up off the couch and be ready for Christmas before Thanksgiving is even officially over. In a move to avert the unruly crush of shoppers that marred past Black Fridays, the retail giant is keeping their doors open around the clock at most of their stores from November 26 to November 27.
Traditionally on Black Friday, shoppers will line up hours in advance of early morning store openings, often creating a mob scene when the doors finally allow them inside. Each year seems to bring new stories of crowd mayhem, including a
Walmart worker who was trampled by shoppers last Christmas.
This year, with the tough economy and tight budgets, analysts are expecting even bigger crowds searching for holiday sales and deep discounts. Walmart, taking a pragmatic approach, is simply letting bargain hunters come in and start shopping as early as they want. Another step they're taking to manage the anticipated crowd is to spread deals all over the store.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is this: Even though you can enter the store and line up for big-ticket items early, the
actual sales don't begin until 5 a.m. Friday. So, if you're going Thursday night and plan to hang around for the sales, you might want to pack yourself a turkey sandwich!
Are you going to be a 3 a.m. Walmart shopper? Or will you stick with the DVD and third slice of pie plan?

So, basically it's the same old, same old for WalMart, because most of them are open 24/7! Oh, yea....the *good* sales start at 5am.....ZZZzzzzzzzzz

Instead of the mob at the door, it will be in the check out line. The customers will get the merchandise and (sit) in line for hours. How is that solving the problem?

I think again Americans are forgetting to show that it isn't the gifts we receive or that game that no one else has, but the meaning of christmas is family, JESUS and the gifts are really should be secondary. With so many people out of work retailers are making this year about money not about more convenience or safety. Look yourselves in the mirror and ask is that gift really what I want to teach my family or do I want them to know how and why the season is important.

exactly right, i worked at a walmart for years, and we did just that for many black fridays, we had the sale items spread out and passed out maps at the door.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE STUPIDEST IDEA WAL-MART HAS EVER HAD!

As others have said, It's just the same thing that the 24 hour Walmarts, Meijer, etc have done for years. Its really not bad, instead of waiting outside for an hour or even hours in the cold, you can just do your shopping at a relaxed pace in the middle of the night. Lines might get VERY long though right at 5am at stores that dont have many registers. When they do the big ticket items though right before 5am, it can get pretty crazy. At Meijer a few years ago, I did get rammed with several shopping carts, and witnessed someone take out an entire end of aisle display knocking hundreds of Monopoly games on the floor as shoppers raced across the store to get the $100 lcd tvs that had been placed over in the grocery end of the store.

I haven't seen ONE Black Friday sale that was good enough to make me get out of my warm bed and engage in a tug of war with someone when it's not even light out. LOL. This whole "Black Friday" thing is such a commercial hype, it's funny. The stores are pitching it for their yearly sales numbers...really, there's nothing I can't get if I watch sale ads during the year. I cook all day on Thursday ( and Wednesday, too)...there's no way I have the energy for all that. LOL. I can't BELIEVE that poor man was trampled on by these rabid shoppers. As one Walmart employee said, "the deals weren't even that good." It's crazy.

If you want to get your children excited about nature....this educational product is sweeping the country. It's called the TickleMe Plant It’s a real plant that Moves when you Tickle It. The leaves close and even the branches droop when Tickled. Now it can easily be grown indoors year round. Who knew a plant could move when Tickled. You can see the video and its even more fun to grow your own. My Students love it.
Just search The Tickle Me Plant or find it here

So what is the big benefit? You get there at 1 AM and you cannot check out until the sales pricing starts at 5 AM? I see no point in making it any earlier, other than greed by WalMart and disrupting a great family evening and holiday. Sure it sounds good for the pockets of WalMart and literally screws a family evening together by having some work thru the night.

Employees work through the night regardless. They're just trying to get rid of the stampede. People become real jerks on black friday. Those crowds are dangerous.

how true. thanks to walmart opening all day and night, the walmart employees do not get to celebrate thanksgiving. they are told they have to work and the shifts are 9-12 hours. they are told it's business and the implications are that if you don't work you could be fired. then they are told celebrate some other day.
and to all you people who say be thankful you have a job , or if you don't like working holidays, then you shouldn't work there, THE STORE WAS NOT ORIGINALLY OPENED ON THANKSGIVING, AND THIS IS AN AMERICAN HOLIDAY, A HOLIDAY FOR FAMILY, AND IT SHOULD BE CLOSED.
if the stores feel the need to open, then close by noon time and let the employees enjoy their thanksgiving with theirfamily or get volunteers to work, and yes there will be people who will volunteer.

Not sure where you live. But here in Seattle, WA., most of the workers are Muslim at the Walmarts, Kmarts, Targets etc... So they have all holidays covered 24/7.
dinasews 11-11-2009 @ 1:56PM
This is ridiculous. The people that work there should be able to enjoy a holiday and not have to worry about working! I would recommend that people stay away to preserve the few days off that America has now.

even though Walmart is closed they still have almost a full staff working. they have to make sure things are stocked, signs are up,food is being prepared, etc.this is the same for just about every big box store-Target,Kmart,Best Buy. I worked in a mall & even though we opened at 6am I had to be at work at 3am to make sure the store was ready. company policy was new items, sale items,& sale prices could not go on the floor early(after closing Wednesday nite)we had to wait until Fri morning.working in retail has it's own set of rules, especially during October-January. if people dont like working holidays or some really funky hours then they shouldnt apply for a job there.
Aggie 11-15-2009 @ 8:27AM
Your right. The store should be closed on Thanksgiving and I just bet the "Fat Cats" that run the place will be home with their families.
Andy 11-11-2009 @ 2:03PM
Unless your a shopaholic with no family and no life, this might be perfect for you. But, no thanks, I avoid the whole weekend with any kind of shopping period!

Thanksgiving Day should be spent with your families at home, this includes Walmart employees!! I hope walmart reconsiders their decision!
