Have a very...Nazi Christmas? Credit: YouTube
Casey Lehman thought she was getting a bargain when she bought the roll of paper at a $1 store, but instead found herself about to wrap a present with a symbol most closely associated with Nazi Germany.
"I pulled it down from the closet, and for the first time saw it and thought, 'Oh wow. That's really inappropriate'," Lehman told Orlando TV station WESH. She added, "If I had sent this out on my Christmas gifts and someone had pointed it out to me I would have been mortified. I would have been really embarrassed."
The swastika symbol has been around for a long time, and hasn't always had a bad reputation. Swastikas appear on pottery and coins as early as 3,000 years ago, in cultures as diverse as China, Germany and Greece, and it remains a sacred Hindu symbol. However, since it was adopted by Adolph Hitler during World War II, you could say it's fallen out of favor as a design element in Western culture.
The pattern on this wrapping paper, in fact, is most likely an ancient Sanskrit symbol for good luck rather than an actual swastika (a dot included in each quadrant distinguishes it from the Nazi swastika). Either way, Lehman won't be using the paper to wrap any gifts this year. She and her mother and fiancé all agree that the swastika design isn't the kind of Christmas spirit they were looking for.
The manager of Dollar Mania, where Mrs. Lehman bought the paper, denied any knowledge of the design before she brought it to his attention -- but he's definitely making sure he doesn't sell any more of the potentially-upsetting wrapping paper.

So a 'symbol' that has been used by various cultures for thousands of years before the Nazi's is supposed to illicit some sort of guilt in me? I am tired of 'political correctness', tired of apologizing for what happened before I was born. Human history is one long parade of one people exploiting other people, get over it already. Who cares, this is not news, it is sensationalism and malarchy.... aol is a joke.

Don't be such an insensitive idiot. This isn't about being politically correct. The Nazi party was evil, and they tainted the symbol. It's unfortunate, but the symbol will be associated with hate and death. Why don't you try blaming the one responsible? His name was Hitler, you may have heard of him.
bluqe,11-16-2009, 9:41AM
First, I believe that symbol was native indian long befor the Nazi Party used it. My second comment is simply, that I wonder if the pundits would have objected had the symbol been that of the Muslim cresent?
WHAT SAY YOU?

Is this coincidental or is it another way to conveniently create controversy and introduce THE MOST DISCUSSED SUBJECT of the twentieth century during the NATIONAL and CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY of CHRISTMAS.

I am just so sick of our hyper-sensitivity over every thing that even appears to be racist.
The design on the paper, as many others have pointed out, has been used for centuries in many cultures. The Nazi's did not invent it.
I am from the South. I am proud of the Confederate Flag because my father's side of the family has many relatives who fought and died in that war and before that, the Revolutionary war. I have the 'Stars and Bars' on the front of my car. However, I had it
made a little differently. I had them put "Pride....NOT Prejudice" on it. I have had several African-Americans stop me and tell me that they liked that license plate because whoever might notice it knows that it is the HERITAGE I am proud of. Not the hate. Things are getting out of hand. With all the other problems in the world, how can someone get so worked up over something like this. Lady, if you found the wrapping paper offensive, return it to the store, tell the manager why and drop it. It's not a real swasticker anyway as it has addition (the dots inside it) that make it different symbol for another culture.
Lets get centered on more important things people! Winter is coming and some people will not be able to afford to heat their homes right here in this country. Kids will go to bed hungry. Elderly go without medication because of the outrageous cost of drugs. Now that is what I call a really serious issue that deserves outrage and press coverage!

Oh Divalady, you have GOT to get over yourself. It was just an expression she used. ('Our' Navaho Indians...) and I'm sure she didn't mean we 'owned' them. Your attitude is so very typical of the idiotic politically correct mentality that causes so many unwarranted issues. OUR Navaho is simply a term to mean 'our own people'. Stop being such a destructive force.

The Swastika pre-dates Christianity and is usually associated (prior to Nazi Germany) with the change of seasons, the Four Directions, and the ever-changing world. Only people looking for conspiracies (or ignorant of history) would read anything into it... it is a multi-holiday wrapping paper, get over it

amazing! mistrust paranoia anger I guess h/itler knew what he was doing when he turned that ancient sign upside down His twisted psychopathic mind.. to this day.. incites hate and division! If you detest what he stood for and what he did... instead of having angry hate filled comments... why not have an enlightened discussion.. those who are more knowledgable about this symbiology of the "crooked cross"... educate others... so that there is LESS of this behavior that hiter would have applauded!

It's green wrapping paper, that's all I see! Appropriate for any gift giving, any time of year.
When are racist people going to stop screaming - every day, everywhere I hear people reminding everyone what happened 30 years ago or 50 years ago or 100 years ago. History is part of the past and should be saved there, and CELEBRATED. If something bad happened, try to HEAL!
I am of no color and am a mixture of many cultural backgrounds. Something happened to every one of my ancestors. I dont have to remind anyone because it didnt happen to me. The most racist of people I have seen or met live their lives trying to be a martyr. Take your meds and get on with life; quit reminding yourself of things that probably happened to other people before you were born.

FYI here in the United States of America, in representation to many AMERICANS the swastika derrived from WW2 is offensive for the involvement of the hitler's nazi party. Also represents and anit-christian emblem - a broken cross. Many Americans who served the United States of America have suffered under that swastika sign. Give those persons a break will you, for I have nothing against our Native Americans, since I too am the same.

That is a hindu symbol. Maybe research a bit before flying off the handle.
As long as the four dots are in the "swastika" it's a religious hindu symbol.
Not really for Christmas, but big deal, you're out maybe $2.00?
Become educated. Please.

I have an unfinished quilt top of a quilt made in the 1930s that looks like green swaztikas. The pattern in the quilt world was called "Lindy's Folly" but many women who were making tops in that pattern prior to WWII did not finish them when the war broke out because of what the swaztika represented. I still haven't finished the quilt yet but intend to. Some woman worked very hard hand sewing the quilt long before the war broke out. I figure her quilt deserves to be finished.

I have an old hardcover Camp Fire Girls book titled "Across the Sea" that features Native Americans paddling a canoe with a swastika painted on the bow. Is that bad?
