Black Friday, here we come! Photo: Flickr, Peter Hilton
Thinking of hitting the mall for Black Friday while the rest of us lazy shoppers snooze the morning away? Don't forget your armor; it's a scary world out there. We've got tons of tricks and tips to help you get through the day -- unharmed and rich with savings. Ready?:
1. Dress appropriately.
Sure, you want to show off your new 3-inch heels, but unless you're going clubbing on Black Friday, leave the stilettos at home. Instead, opt for comfortable flats that will bring you through the long haul -- after all, this day is not for the faint at heel!
2. Preparation is key!
Your boy scout son is nodding his head right about now. Stash a few granola bars, antibacterial soap, baby wipes, Band Aids, and whatever else you might need for any miscellaneous mishaps that may occur along the way (Diet Coke? Flask? Taser?). The last thing you want to do on your way to scoring a $5 microwave is stop for a snack break.
3. Scout the scene.
Check out any unfamiliar stores a few days before Thanksgiving so you can make a beeline to the items you're coveting. Talk to sales associates to find out where special door busters will be placed. Strategy is everything.
4. Know your sales.
Bring sale ads with you for clarification and extra in-store coupons, or in case you hit an extra grouchy associate that you'll need to defend yourself against. Many stores will price-match, but you can't get the deal without the coupon!
5. Be fierce.
Black Friday is the Olympics of shopping. Leave uninterested spouses or slowpoke children at home and bring teenagers who can run fast and aren't afraid of a good bribe.
6. Park it.
Never waste time circling a parking lot four times to get a spot by the door; it only wastes time. Instead, park in the first spot you see and walk off all that turkey you ate the day before!
7. Calm down.
The term "door busters" isn't meant to be literal, so let's all band together to experience a stampede-free Black Friday. After all, a $10 DVD player isn't worth a $900 dollar ER visit.
8. Divide and Conquer.
Bring a few (fast!) friends and find out what their needs are. By shopping together, you can hit different areas of the store and meet back at the checkout faster than you can say "Black Friday."
9. Focus.
Shop only your advertised necessities that you've prepared for. Each moment you spend picking out regular-priced underwear will lessen your chance of scoring that $50 computer.
Follow our handy Black Friday guide and breeze through this year's holiday shopping. And remember -- it's OK to pick out a gift for yourself. 'Tis the season!

Stand in line all night with strangers so that I can get trampled when the doors open? Who the hell thinks of this stuff? Why are people this dense and pathetic? You do realize what a "doorbuster" is don't you? It's a loss leading product that they couldn't sell all year. The reason they sell this stuff at such heavy discounts is because the stores WANT TO GET RID OF IT! They do this as a way of clearing their shelves for the products people actually want.
Go on, stand in line you little sheep! I'm sleeping in my warm bed, eating leftovers, and watching movies.

As a reader of your site: Can Erin please cut down on her exclamation points? There six of 'em in this short article alone. Six! Like she's shouting at us! Really, these should be used sparingly! Honestly!
But seriously and sincerely, please, stopping hit the exclamation point key so often. It makes your articles hard to read.

So not sure you are talking about my post but if you are my name is Erica not Erin and this site is to not to talk about how many explanation points someone puts, people talk about the article so get over the explanation points!!!

Erica -- My comments were directed at Erin Loechner, the reporter who wrote the original article. I'm not sure why you thought they were directed at you, so apologies for any mixup.
However, I still say in the case of Ms. Loechner: She is being paid to write and limiting exclamation points is a common journalism 101 teaching point. Her work will simply read better.

You really practice what you preach, Mikey? How about doing something real for the holidays, like not calling people names because they enjoy getting in the holiday spirit? The last time I shopped on "Black Friday" was many years ago. My sisters & I went shopping at 5 A.M., dressed in Holiday attire, right down to the socks, and earrings. People smiled at us and wished us a Merry Christmas. We were not trampled, and had a great time. We didn't hurt anyone, or see any fighting over merchandise. It is now just a happy memory.

Deb,
You really need to chill. No one is putting down your comments. Sounds like you are way too defensive. You do not have to try and defend yourself being a Christian. I am sure most everyone here is a Christian. Even if they are not they really could care less because they probably won't be celebrating Christmas. You see Deb, as a teacher I have some insight into this. You get so upset over all the people that want to go shopping on Black Friday when that is really all they want to do---go shopping and get some good deals for the people they love.
Children whose parents are not Christians are not raised as Christians themselves, therefore they or their parents do not shop Black Friday. Having said that doesn't it make more sense--now--to agree with me that the shoppers on Black Friday are indeed Christians? As for the Bible, the Bible was written by a bunch of men OTHER than Christ or any of his family. Therefore how do we really know his birthday is December 25th? Does it actually say it in the Bible Deb? No sweetie it does not. A date is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible. Not only that, the Bible should never be taken literally. These people that wrote the Bible were the world's first Christians. Jesus Christ spent 3 years of his life as a teacher before he sacrificed himself on the cross for all of us. The New Testament is a very short section of the Bible, and yet it is this section that tells us the story of Jesus Christ. Scholars today will tell us that we should view the contents of the New Testament with 50% faith and 50% skepticism. After all there are not many "red letter" words in the NT.
I could go on with this forever. My father wanted to be a priest. He was even training for it and met my mom. Thats why I am here. My dad passed on the "religious gene" as my mom likes to call it, to me. Everything he knew, and believe me that man knew a LOT he taught me. One thing I can tell you Deb, you MUST treat others the way you would like to be treated. That is the NUMBER ONE rule of Christianity. All the negativity and sarcasm thrown out at these innocent people who just enjoy shopping on Black Friday is cruel and not worthy of a good Christian soul. Pull back and reexamine your faith. irishbookfairy

I have been shopping on Black Friday for 14 years now with my good friend. It has become a yearly tradition. When we first began we would get together the night before and compare lists and who had the best price and run as fast as we could into the store to get the item "our kids just had to have" Now that our kids are teens and older we just go to keep the tradition alive. This year my plan is to decorate my tree in all Silver and that is what is I will be looking for. Dont forget the Coffee.

black friday is nothing more than our governments way of knowing how we are going to spend money this year . as for christmas being the birth of jesus christ . , it does not state in the king james version the actual date upon his birth . christmas was born of tradition of gift giving , happiness , hope and peace . some religions use other dates to recognize the birth of jesus . but for many , christmas will not be a happy time . those unemployed like myself are facing homelessness . our children will have to go without and the meal will be little . my faith in my religion has grown very weak . i have lost faith in my friends and other christians who never seem to be there when needed . i am guilty of this too . but i have always given money in special contributions to help those in financial need .that is the best way i can help people . i have lost faith in our government . depression has grown strong . there will be no lights or music at my house . i will not pretend i'm happy around others when i'm not . i want to have the christmas spirit but it goes sour anyway .
