Zhu Zhu Pets: Not for Kids?
If you have kids, then you probably know all about Zhu Zhu pets; these mechanical hamsters are the Hot Gift of 2009. And if you were one of the lucky folks who scored one of these wee rodents early on, before they became nearly impossible to find, you're probably patting yourself on the back about now and eagerly anticipating your child's delight on Christmas morning.
Well, you might want to think twice about actually giving that pretend hamster to your child. No, there's nothing wrong with the Zhu Zhu pets -- they're not dangerous, they're just valuable. You'd be better off keeping the mechanical hamster and reselling it. How much better off?
Chris Handy sold his Zhu Zhu pets for ten times their list price, which is approximately $8 a piece, based on the price listed at Walmart's website (which is sold out of Zhu Zhu pets, by the way). After seeing the Zhu Zhu pets on "Good Morning America," Handy cleaned out his local Target, buying 15 of them, all of which he resold online. "We got about ten times what they were worth," he told the AP, "over a thousand dollars." Or, to put it another way, Handy saw a 900% return on his investment.
Not bad for a fake hamster.
