Looking for these boots at a Gap near you? Look again: They're from Barneys. Credit: Barneys New York
It's hard to miss the super cool high-heeled construction-worker-inspired boots worn by the ladies in Gap's current "Gung Ho Ho" ad campaign. But while Gap was "eighty-sixing the rules" for how to spend the holidays (and promoting flannel as the hip thing to wear), they also dissed the cardinal rule of advertising: Show off your own goods.
No, really. The boots, which are prominently featured in the Gap's cheery holiday ads are not available anywhere on the chain's site, nor at Gap's sister store, shoe etailer Piperlime. Did the boots sell out, like so many other cool things this season? Are they the apparel equivalent of a Zhu Zhu pet? Fashionistas have been desperately searching for an answer, and for the boots.
Don't worry, you can still get them, just not at the Gap. The LA Times' Booth More rang up Gap's PR people and got an answer: The sexy lace up ankle boots are part of Barneys' exclusive CO-OP Shoes line. And, despite the fact that they appear in the Gap ads in chocolate brown, they're available in tan only, and at Barneys prices: These heels are made in Italy and retail for $395.
That's a little more than your average pair of Gap boots.
Oh, and those fun red laces? You'll have to buy them separately to holiday-up the look. No word on where the laces can be found.
So what! I wouldn't have wanted the boots anyhow. For that matter, the jeans are too tight and the shirts are too form-hugging. God, I've been waiting FOR SO LONG for the styles to change back to ROOMY shirts.
Ok i work for the Gap company and it's really not a big deal....they are advertising the flannel thats the whole point its not about the shoe! Good lord america y must everything small be made into something huge! i think people just want something to bitch about!
I agree 100% with zhuzhupetkiller - "It is pretty clear that they are advertising flannels, and it's a ridiculous 'rule' that you have to wear only things that you sell. Very stupid. So if a shop doesn't sell jewelry, someone in an ad can't wear it".
DORTHY: Army boots are extremly comfortable. They have to be because soldiers are on their feet sometimes 18 hours at a time. And I take offence to you saying "be glad your don't have to wear Army boots for real" I'm proud to be a soldier and I'm happy to wear Army boots. Where do you think your freedom comes from? I'm sure you have never thought about the sacrfices that we make so that you and your family are safe and free. PROUD TO BE AND AMERICAN, AND PROUD TO WEAR ARMY BOOTS!
First off, I never believed that everything on advertisements was from the marketer myself besides the specific thing they were advertising. I've always wondered if they did or not, and now I get my answer.
Second, I new what the case was before I even watched the video due to my suspicion. I was thinking the whole time, "I want to see this commercial, because I highly doubt there was a close up on the shoes."
I do admit the shoes are interesting though. I'd like to see what they would work with... apparently they were only used in the commercial to make the models taller.
LOL!! The boot are in the commercial fools just in a different color and I love how they have to put Hip-Hop in all the new advertising coming out, lol!! I love people who hate Hip-Hop yet it's everywhere.
Both Gap ads, and that includes the kids one are WAY OVERDONE. Sure Gap has some decent stuff but then so does Guess. And they dont advertise on tv because they dont have to. Next time try to be a "little less Hollywood". The ads make my head spin and I did not go out and purchase any GAP stuff because of them not would I.
They are advertising the plaid shirts. But if they are acording to you advertising the shoes [in a different color], but the jeans, the mens shoes, the belts, and t-shirts are also being advertised - none of which they actors were talking about or pointing out. Get a clue, and a life.
OH MY GOODNESS! LET'S HAVE A NEWS FREAKOUT BECAUSE SOMEONE WORE THE WRONG BOOTS IN A COMMERCIAL!!!! Seriously, they aren't even advertising the boots, they're advertising the shirts. What is the point of this?
Are you people serious! You're upset because the boots the women are wearing didn't come from the GAP or their sister store? If that is the case then you should get mad because you didn't get the maker or the brand name of their underwear and bra's! The ad was about buying flannel shirts for cryin' out loud! If they wanted to advertise the shirts and the boots then they would need to make sure that they carry both items. American's are becoming to petty and complain about the silliest things!
I think I am safe to say that this isn't surprising....it's advertising and this happens all the time....and why they are making a big deal out of it is beyond me.
That commercial is f***ing annoying. I don't care about the boots, or where they came from. That clapping and stomping and slipping around has to go. It makes me not want to go. That is horrible advertising. It does not bring on my chrismasy mood. It's wayyyyy toooo much. I have spoken to my friends and they agree that they would rather drown in their soup.
