This charming little treat comes from a pliable dough that is rolled and shaped into small knots, baked, and then topped with variety of flavored icing -- anise is the perfect addition, but you can use simple vanilla, mint, coffee, caramel, rum, or another extract as your tasty glaze. It's a simple dough, so there's no strange flavors to get used to -- it just offers a fun shape that stands out against the monotony of chips and typical sugary-sweet fare.
Dye the icing different festive colors, add sprinkles or nonpareils, this dough will work with almost any tasty addition!
