Decorate Lego Style
Use good old fashioned Lego colors (red, blue, yellow and green) to decorate the scene. Balloons, streamers and party ware in a variety of Lego colors will keep things festive. You can also purchase Lego-themed birthday party supplies through on line retailers or from the Lego Store.
Let Them Eat Lego Cake!
A Lego brick birthday cake is a perfect centerpiece for the party. A cake baked in a standard 9 X 13 pan will serve eight people. Cool the cake fully and then place it in the freezer for an hour before frosting. Remove your cake from the freezer and place the cake on a cake board or cutting board to ice. Start with a thin layer of colored frosting to create a crumb coat. Place the cake in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to set and then finish frosting. To get the frosting smooth (like the surface of the Lego brick), heat your frosting knife by running it under warm water. After you've finished frosting, create the "Lego nubs" by frosting large marshmallows in the same color as the cake and lining them up in rows. Chilling the marshmallows makes the frosting easier.
Fun and Games
You can take some common party games and give them a Lego twist. Don't forget prizes like Lego key chains or minifigures for everyone who plays.
- Hot Potato can become "Pass the Lego."
- Use Legos as your markers for a game of Bingo.
- Have a jar of Legos and ask the kids to guess how many are inside.
- Have a Lego building contest and give out prizes or certificates for categories like most creative and most colorful. You may want to pre-sort and provide each child the same amount and type of Legos to keep things fair.
- Find the Lego. Place a Lego on a paper plate and cover it with whipped cream. Have the kids search for the Lego without using their hands!
- Lego on a spoon races.
Cute Lego goodie bags can be created by buying plain gift bags in Lego colors and sticking circular fun foam or card stock shapes in the same colors on the front to make them look like Legos. Fill the bags with small Lego sets, Lego shaped candies (found at some candy specialty stores) and party treats for a fun thank you gift for attending your child's party. You can even include a snapshot of the kids with their Lego creations. Make sure to keep copies for yourself!
Lego Store retail locations also now offer on site birthday party packages and take home party packs to help you create the perfect celebration. See the Lego website for more information and a location near you.
