This Father's Day, instead of buying Dad another tie, make one for him. Our crafts expert, Kendra Smoot, shows you how in this step-by-step video.
Supplies:
Template
Paper scissors, fabric scissors
Scotch tape
1 yard patterned fabric
Needle and matching thread
1 yard lightweight interfacing
Knitting needle
To make the tie in our video:
1. Print out template pages; there are 19 pages in total; the links are below the instructions. Use the key to assemble, then tape together. Be sure to tape pieces together at page borders and also on pattern pieces. Cut out.
2. Pin pattern to wrong side of fabric. Cut out.
3. Pin interfacing patter piece to interfacing and cut out.
4. Pin and sew tipping to tie ends. Trim excess fabric at corners and turn inside out using a knitting needle.
5. Sew together large, middle, and small ends. Press joining seams out.
6. Lay interfacing down, making sure tips are snug at both ends, fuse with iron, following package instructions.
7. First fold the outer edges of tie towards the centerline, then fold again. Press. Edges should overlap slightly.
8. Stitch down entire length of tie with an even ladder stitch.
Downloadable template pages (don't be daunted by how many pages there are -- this is a super easy craft, we promise).

Oh my God, I want to gouge my own eyes out... Where's my Xanax? That was the most painful three minutes of my life. Time to go to Barney's.

I felt I needed to make a comment in regards to the layout of the pattern pieces on the fabric. As a sewer for more than 30 years, having made everything from wedding gowns to men's suits, I was puzzled by the pattern being laid out with the grain of the fabric and not with the bias (laid out going across the fabric). It seems to me that without the give and shaping a bias cut will provide, the finished tie will be very hard to tie and will not hang well around the wearer's neck. Since I did not print out the actual pattern itself perhaps this information is given in the written instruction. If not, I'm afraid the instruction, as given in the video, will render a very unpleasant result. I would like to say that as for making a tie this is a very easy process and the task can be completed within a couple of hours. Happy sewing!

@ those that want to critisize this excellent video: Why did you come to watch it? Did you think you were going to be able to press a button and make a tie? I thought the video was very informative and amazing! Also, Why would you want to be so nasty to someone that took the time to make a detailed video, keeping in mind, people with short attention spans may be watching? Also, maybe mental health therapy would be a better fit to those that are so angry. take care.

Hi everyone-
If you are having trouble printing the entire pattern on one page, try printing each sheet individually and piecing it together. It should be to size.

Not sure how this would turn out. Most ties are cut on the bias or in other words at an angle. That is so it will tie properly as fabric cut at an angle has more "give" to it.
I am a professional costumer and this looks like too much work for me....

This tie turned out so small! It's about the length of the ties that are made for 5 year-olds. Maybe the pattern just printed weird, I don't know. But I'm definitely not giving this tiny tie for father's day!
