Prenup Punch

No matter how much you love your fiancé, you may have a legal matter on your mind. Some people consider a prenuptial agreement unromantic; however, it is not uncommon to approach your marriage license (a lawfully binding contract) the way you would a business agreement. If you decide to move forward with a prenup, then toast to never having to use it. A traditional punch, according to cocktail historian David Wondrich, is made of sugar, bitters or spices, lemon, water, and a high-proof spirit. This drink has those elements in a single-serving format.

Recipe
1 ½ ounces pear vodka or high proof white rum
¾ ounce wildflower honey–infused simple syrup, page 9
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ ounce lemon juice
Splash sparkling water
1 edible flower

Shake vodka, honey-infused simple syrup, cloves, and lemon juice with ice. Strain into a wine glass filled with fresh ice. Top with a splash of sparkling water. Float an edible flower on the surface of the drink.

The Sweetheart Cocktail
(Martini Glass)

This cocktail looks like a valentine with its layers of red, pink, and white, and its silky texture makes it a sensual sipping experience. The Campari has a bitter flavor that is balanced by the tart lemon and sweet grenadine. The egg white makes the drink velvety and creates a slight foam on its surface.

Recipe
1 ½ ounces Pinky vodka
1 ounce simple syrup, page 9
¾ ounce lemon juice
¼ ounce Campari
1 small egg white
¼ ounce grenadine

Pour all ingredients except grenadine into a mixing glass. Dry shake for a few seconds. Fill with ice and shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds to make the egg white frothy. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Slowly drizzle grenadine into the cocktail, allowing it to settle at the bottom of the glass, creating a layered effect.

Thyme for Romance

This cocktail is made in a classic style and with Bols genever, a re-released herbal gin predecessor from a centuries-old recipe. Give it a try!

Recipe
½ -inch piece fresh ginger
1 ½ ounces Bols genever
1 ounce thyme-infused simple syrup, page 9
¾ ounce lime juice
Dash Angostura bitters
1 sprig fresh thyme

Muddle ginger in the bottom of a mixing glass. Add Bols genever, simple syrup, lime juice, bitters, and ice. Shake and strain into a small cocktail glass. Garnish with a sprig of thyme.

Blushing Bride

I developed several versions of this recipe, and this formula is my favorite. Wine cocktails are a fun and unique way to experiment behind your home bar, and they give wine lovers a new way to think about enjoying their favorite beverage.

Recipe
1 heaping tablespoon diced strawberries
1 tablespoon torn basil
1 ounce strawberry syrup (or strawberry liqueur)
¼ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 ounces rosé wine
Pinch freshly ground black pepper
Splash soda water
1 whole strawberry

Muddle diced strawberries and torn basil in the bottom of a tall glass. Add the strawberry syrup through pepper and shake with ice. Strain into a wine glass and add a splash of soda water. Garnish with a whole strawberry on the side of the glass.

Bouquet of Rosé
(Champagne Coupe)

This champagne cocktail is simple, elegant, and dripping with romance. I designed it for the launch of Napa's Domaine Carneros Brut Rosé (Taittinger Champagne). I took my cue from the light fruit aromas inherent to this bubbly, and layered them with the softly feminine floral influence of roses.

Recipe
Spritz rose water
½ ounce rose-infused simple syrup, page 9
3 ½ ounces sparkling rosé
1 sprig fresh lavender
Spritz a chilled champagne coupe with rose water. Pour in rose-infused simple syrup and sparkling rosé. Lay a sprig of fresh lavender across the top of the glass as an aromatic garnish.
