Happy Sete de Setembro! What, you didn't know it was a holiday? Well, it's not as well-known or widely-celebrated in the United States, but September 7 is the date of the Brazilian Declaration of Independence.

It's a rather romantic story, really. The Brazilian Declaration of Independence occurred because Princess Leopoldina of Habsburg sent her husband, Prince Pedro, a note warning him of Portugal's intent to usurp his power on Sept. 7, 1822. Knowing nothing but what his devoted wife had told him, Prince Pedro turned to his companions, unsheathed his sword and cried, "Independence or death!"

While that's a pretty serious declaration, the only thing you need to declare in order to properly celebrate the occasion is what beverage you'll be toasting with. And it gets even easier, because, really, the only cocktail we're even going to consider is the caipirinha, which is Brazil's official cocktail.

Saúde!
