After a long night of trick-or-treating with the kiddies you're probably sneaking into their candy bags enjoying the fruits of their labors. Why not pair those Smarties with a glass of wine?
Think it can't be done? Think again! Master Sommelier and Director of Wines at Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants Emily Wines (yes, that's her real name!) suggests these sweet pairings. Cheers!
Candy Corn is super sugary, but overall it has a neutral flavor. A very floral wine like Muscat de Beaumes de Venise would be perfect. "It's a fortified Muscat with a rich orange blossom flavor from the South of France," says Wines.
Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bars pair nicely with a fruity, low-alcohol wine like Brachetto d'Aqui from Northern Italy. "It sparkles lightly, is bright pink, and tastes like raspberries and roses," notes Wines.
Hot Tamales have an intense spice and sweetness that demands a high acid wine with low alcohol to cut the spice and a high sugar content to compete with the candy, says Wines. Her pick: A German Riesling.
Tootsie Rolls are delicious with Tawny Port. Wines suggests a 20-year-old port, which will taste like nuts and orange peel.
Reese's Pieces are perfect with Vin Santo from Italy, says Wines. Vin Santo has a nutty flavor -- a great match with the peanut buttery-ness of the candy.
