Supplies:
Eggs
100 percent silk scarves or ties
1/2 yard white fabric
twist ties
white vinegar
vegetable oil
To make the silk dyed eggs:
1. Cut silk scarves or ties and white fabric into 7"x7" squares.
2. Wrap an egg tightly in silk. Then wrap in white fabric and secure with a twist tie.
3. Repeat with all eggs.
4. Place eggs in a non-reactive metal or glass pot. Fill with water. Add 3 Tb. white vinegar.
5. Boil water for 15 minutes.
6. Remove eggs. Let cool and unwrap.
7. If desired, rub eggs with vegetable oil to make shiny.
8. Repeat! The pieces of silk can be used to dye eggs up to 2-3 times each.
Editor's note: The eggs should be raw when you wrap them in the silk/white fabric. Put them in the water and boil for 15 minutes; the eggs come out dyed and hard boiled. No need to hard boil them ahead of time. Do not eat the eggs after they have been dyed.

Looks like fun, but where does the vegetable oil come in? It's not mentioned in the video or the written instructions.

The cooking for 15 hard boils them, can you eat them or is dye toxic?
Please advise as my daughter likes to eat the eggs. Thanks!

In step 5 it mention boiling water for 15 min. What it this for? I think my little group of girls would love to do something like this.

The boiling cooks the eggs.

What is the dye made of. Is it food safe?

I would not eat the eggs afterward. The dye can easily be absorbed by the egg white. The dye used in clothing is not welcome in the human body.

I don't mean to be stupid here, but are the eggs already hard boiled before you dye them and then boil them again? Thanks.

IMPORTANT: when using the silk ties, be sure the colorful "outside" printed side of the fabric is against the shells. This can be done without the white cloth, but the colors will leach into the water -- especially burgundy.

I would NOT eat the eggs after this dying method. There is no guarantee that the dye used in the scarves or ties is safe and non toxic, in fact, most likely they are not because the people who make the scarves and ties are not thinking they are going to be used to food purposes. The dye used on eggs does seep through the shell (have you ever noticed when using a regular childrens egg dying process that when you peel the egg to eat it, the white is sometimes the color the egg was dyed? because dye can seep through the shell, and so can toxins.
It is not certain that any toxins from the dye in the scarves or ties would be eliminated in the boiling process. If your going to use this method to dye eggs, I would reccomend doing it for decorative purposes only and not to eat the eggs.
As for the boiling, the eggs do not need to be boiled prior to dying them as the 15 minute boiling process for the dying will hard boil the eggs.

Just as when washing laundry, I think the colors would be a lot more vibrant if you boiled similarly colored silks together rather than mixing lights with darks. Also, boiling them for 15 minutes may be necessary to get the silk to release it's beauty, but I wouldn't plan on using the eggs for a post-hunt salad. They must come out like rubber!

I know this may sound like a silly question, but you do boil the eggs first, right, like when you are coloring them. 2nd question, do they not continue to cook when you wrap them and boil them for an additional 15 minutes?

I would think they would be hard boiled already before you dye them..
Lynn,3-26-2010, 11:37AM
They become hard boiled dduring the process of the dying.
